Is LASIK Corrective Vision Surgery Right for You? Part II

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Maureen_Cook] Maureen Cook More than 9 out of 10 LASIK patients, recently interviewed eight years after their surgical procedure, said they were very satisfied with their post-operative quality of life. Not only did they express satisfaction at their own personal outcomes, but they were also willing to recommend this particular type of corrective vision surgery to others. Let’s take a closer look at LASIK surgery so you can decide whether it’s right for you. The different types of LASIK surgery. LASIK surgery comprises two basic types: Standard LASIK and Custom LASIK. In both cases the preparatory and post-operative procedures will be conducted along very similar lines. Before surgery, your ophthalmologist will determine your eligibility for corrective vision surgery by carrying out a detailed eye examination. This will include the use of a corneal topographer to photograph the unique contours and irregularities of your eye. Screening for disqualifying conditions like cataracts and glaucoma will also be carried out. Post-operatively, antibiotic eye drops will usually be prescribed for use four times daily over two weeks. Rubbing the eyes, an involuntary response while sleeping, should be avoided as it might dislodge the newly-settling LASIK flap. To reduce this risk of displacement, some surgeons advocate the wearing of a clear shield over the eye for the first week. The day of your treatment. On the day of your treatment, which will be an outpatient procedure of typically one hour’s duration, you’ll have topical anaesthetic drops applied to the eye. The skin around the eye will be cleaned with antiseptic solution and a sterile drape placed over it. Your head will be positioned under the laser and an eyelid speculum placed in your eye to retain the eyelids. A suction ring, which guides the fine blade used to make the corneal incision, is then placed on the eye. A thin flap is then created by one quick slice across the top of the cornea. Having folded back the flap, the laser is used to remove a microscopic amount of corneal tissue before the flap is replaced in its original position. A saline solution washes away any particles which may have landed on the exposed cornea during the procedure. You will now rest for a little while before going home. It is often recommended that LASIK surgery is performed on one eye at a time (the procedure is not reversible). If all goes well, however, and the treated eye shows post-operative stability, then the second eye could be treated within two or three months after the first procedure. Custom LASIK Surgery. In Standard Lasik, the patient’s prescription is the sole determinant of the number and location of computer-controlled laser pulses delivered to the eye. As with most things in life, however, the more information which is made available to the surgeon, the greater the likelihood that the corrective vision surgery will result in a better overall quality of vision for the patient. This has been borne out by comparing patients’ evaluations over the two LASIK procedures. Custom LASIK has the edge over traditional LASIK on two counts: temporary problems of haloes and distorted vision experienced post-traditional LASIK surgery are not encountered in Custom LASIK. Problems with glare or starburst around lights, commonly experienced by traditional LASIK patients when the pupil is dilated at night or under low light conditions, were not repeated by custom LASIK patients. The absence of these temporary problems, along with a slightly higher figure for visual acuity in custom LASIK patients, are attributable to the three-dimensional image of the patient’s eye which is fed into the computer. Compared to the two-dimensional image of the conventional procedure, the surgeon has a detailed, 3-D map of a patient’s eye imperfections at his disposal. This allows him to work with a greater degree of accuracy and to achieve even better quality of vision for his patients. Risks and complications. Any surgical procedure carries risks. However , it should be pointed out that there are LASIK-specific problems related to the creation of the hinged corneal flap. Complications, including damage to or wrinkling of the corneal flap or penetration of the eye by the microkeratome (surgical blade), may result in permanent loss of best corrected vision. Corrective lenses would then have to be worn by the patient. The eye might also be under-or over-treated. Retreatment for under-correction can usually be carried out 4-12 weeks after the primary LASIK procedure. The original flap is lifted once more and further tissue is removed to correct the residual refractive error. Over-treatment, however, entails consequences similar to corneal flap damage: the need to continue wearing corrective lenses. An experienced, skilled surgeon is, therefore, vitally important. Tips on choosing a LASIK surgery surgeon. Interview several surgeons whose names have been referred to you from people you trust. Be well-prepared with questions on your likely refractive outcome; the cost of your treatment (are all medication and clinical reviews included in the treatment costs?), and the cost of possible retreatment. Will the surgeon who performs the surgery be present at the subsequent follow-up clinics? You only have one pair of eyes so make sure that cost alone doesn’t determine your choice of surgeon. Go for the best, most experienced surgeon you can afford. 2006 Maureen P CookMaureen Cook writes articles for publication from her home in England. How To Attract Asian Women - Surefire Ways To Get An Asian Girlfriend

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Derek Rake Given the increasing number of Asian women worldwide, it’s no wonder that many men want to learn how to attract Asian women. We see lots of movies and articles that portray these sexy women as very eager to please their men. Many Caucasian men enjoy the exotic look of Asian women and are quick to seek their company. This has become such a current trend that you will now see abbreviations in the personal ads such as "AAF" which means "Asian-American Female". Let’s focus on ways to get an Asian girlfriend so you can start discovering the positive benefits for yourself. First of all, you need to know where to look to find Asian women. Start frequenting places where you know there will be a large number of Asian women. For example, make it a point to dine out at your favorite Japanese restaurant at least once a week, attend a dance hosted by an Asian club or even do some of your shopping at Asian stores where you can chat up the employees. If your main focus is learning how to attract Asian women, you will begin to discover great venues filled with many Orientals. You also need to make yourself culturally aware of the differences that may exist if you get involved with an interracial relationship. Learning how to attract Asian women may require a little more effort than dating Caucasian women. For example, you need to respect the traditional customs of an Asian woman, just like you would with any other culture. Don’t come across as too brash or forward and pay attention to how things are done within her home. Although, it may sound stereotypical, many traditional Asian women are accustomed to adopting a more "subservient" role than their Caucasian counterparts adopt, this is not meant as a derogatory statement, but more of a cultural observation. Therefore, you should make sure to present yourself as a "real man" who likes to take control. Learning how to attract Asian women involves making the majority of the decisions and letting her feel she will be well taken care of at all times especially during sex. Because an Asian woman is less likely to compete for a dominant role, she will be more likely to appreciate your confident take-charge attitude. If you are a Caucasian man who wants to hop on the current bandwagon and learn how to attract Asian women, focus on where to find them first. Once you discover places these women like to frequent, make it a point to learn a bit about their background and customs. You can easily ruin a good date by making a cultural faux pas you weren’t even aware of. Last but not least, remember to maintain an air of confidence and control when exploring a relationship with an Asian woman. Pest Control - Garden Pests

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Stephanie McIntyre The list of bug pests that the gardener has to battle could easily fill a book. There really are too many to cover in one online article. But here are some of the ones that most gardeners will come across at one time or another. Slugs - these slow moving slime buckets can do serious damage to both ornamental and vegetable plants. And since they’re nocturnal, you must creep about at night, flashlight in hand to catch them in the act. There are a number of effective methods and products that can be used against them. Here are some: Make a beer trap. Set a bowl or saucer in the ground with the lip just a little above the soil and fill with beer. Place them approximately every three feet in slug land. Slugs are attracted to the yeast, crawl in and drown. Clean out the trap in the morning and replenish the beer as needed. Sprinkle something with sharp edges around areas that slugs frequent. When they crawl across this barrier, they slice themselves and leak precious bodily fluids, which kills them. Diatomaceous earth, sharp sand, or crushed egg or oyster shells will do the trick. Iron phosphate baits that you sprinkle around your plants are an effective natural control. The slugs can’t resist eating it and once they do it stops the feeding urge so they die. Aphids - these small (less than 1/8 inch) insects can appear in great numbers on your garden plants in a hurry. Thankfully they are fairly easy to get rid of: all that’s required is a little diligence. You can remove them from plants with the spray from a hose that’s strong enough to knock them off but not forceful enough to damage plants. This harms their mouthparts so that they can’t feed. Ladybugs and their larvae love to eat aphids. They will soon appear after aphids do. If you need more you can order them by mail. And you can use insecticidal soaps to kill aphids as well. These are safe and not toxic to humans and pets. Cutworms - are bad bugs that like to feast on emerging seedlings. During the night, they can devastate a garden full of very young plants. Prevention is the best approach with these baddies. Protect young plants with some type of tube that extends 2″ below the soil surface and about 3″ above. Also you can come out at night and collect them by hand and drop them into soapy water. And you can spread and sprinkle eggshells around areas cutworms are known to frequent. Cucumber beetles - these green spotted or yellow striped beetles can cause serious damage to members of the cucurbit family because they transmit the disease bacterial wilt. Cucurbits include cucumbers, melons and squash. Feeding adult beetles spread the disease and once it’s infected, there’s nothing one can do. Eventually the entire plant dies. The best control against cucumber beetles is to use row covers to prevent contact with plants. You can also hand pick them when you see them, but they move pretty fast and anyway, by then it may be too late. Some have success using a Dustbuster type hand-vac to remove them. You can also try yellow sticky traps, which they are attracted to and which will trap them. Thrips - these tiny, 1/20″ bugs are small in size but big in terms of the damage they cause. They damage a plant by sucking the juices from them, which affects plant growth and the formation of foliage and flowers. They tend to feed in unexposed areas so they are sometimes difficult to get at. They also transmit these two diseases for which there are no controls: impatiens necrotic spot virus and tomato spotted wilt virus. They are not easy to control but if you find them you can try these steps: - Use a strong jet of water to knock them from the plant. - Get rid of those plant sections and flowers that have been affected. - Mulches made of aluminum foil have been shown in some cases to be effective. - Use overhead watering which can kill them. - Insecticidal soaps are effective if you can reach the thrips. - And of course there are always natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings and mantids. Prepaid Phone Users Can Now Recycle their Handsets

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jade_Amethyst]Jade Amethyst Mobile users can now recycle their old mobile handsets that were previously used with other network providers without the hassle of having it technically unlocked by the former service carrier and without violating the copyright laws of the State. If the phone is locked to a certain service provider, it could not be used with another network. Unlocking a cellular phone normally entails the entering of a certain password. In some countries like the United States, phone unlocking requires the existing carriers positive act to give the pass code upon customers request. Representatives of the mobile network basically assist the phone users to get their phone free from the bondage of the existing network. The main point here is the networks lock for the postpaid plan and the sim card locked for the prepaid plan. There are various forms locking schemes such as the keypad lock and the security lock. Keypad lock works when the owner of a handset would want to keep the device safe from any unintended or accidental pressing of a key. Such as when a person places it inside his pocket and hit the keypad by chance, the phone might dial by itself and run out the credit. To avoid this incident, the keypad can be locked by pressing some keys on it, so that even if its keys were inadvertently hit, the phone shall not recognize the command of the keys pressed until after it is unlocked again by pressing certain unlocking keys. Security lock operates to safeguard the private use by the owner of his mobile phone. The mobile phone shall refuse to open when it is a security password activated. Only the owner who knows the correct password can duly open the service of the phone. The Federal Law in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act or DCMA has recently issued some exceptions that render an unlocking act, previously punishable, valid. Every three years, a set of exemptions is released by the Copyright office, as it deems necessary. Among the exemptions listed is the privilege granted to consumers to unlock their mobile handset. Prior to the amendment, the copyright law imposed the restrictions on the use of phone relative to the prohibition to access the handsets firmware to support the business model. Since the law is already modified and is now allowing access to firmware, the consumers can already recycle their phone. For postpaid plan holders, they can conveniently take their phones to another network provider upon the termination of their old contract with the existing network company. Prepaid plan users shall acquire more advantages from this development. They can possibly keep in one handset the services of two or more network carriers by maintaining as many sim cards as they want. Sim cards are ones that power the prepaid phone and through which the services of the network providers operate. If you are a prepaid plan user, you can expediently utilize another network carrier by just taking out your sim card from your phone and inserting the other sim card connected to another network. Sim card obtains credit from [http://www.flatrateonline.net ]prepaid phone cards that come out in different prices in any store. The non-infringement exceptions circulated lately by the copyright law would surely benefit the prepaid phone users more than postpaid plan holders were. 10 Smashing Tricks to Burn Yourself to a Gorgeous Body

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Joseph Plazo Most folks I know start off the New Year by making resolutions to lose weight and get in shape. often, this mission is often easier said than done. Some last a little longer than others, but for most, impetus starts to fizzle soon into the next buffet engagement. Have no fear: ten delightful tactics can empower you to motivate your self to a better body. Whether you are looking to lose a lot or just a few pounds or you want to exercise more to tone your body, you can create an action plan that can help you stay motivated. Conviction: Conviction is the primal way for you to motivate yourself to exercise more or to stick to a diet. Faith in yourself is also known as self-efficacy and it means that once you believe that you can do something, no matter how hard, you do it. Those that have a lot of self-esteem believe that they have the power to make changes in themselves. Those without solid self-confidence will find that they will have a much more difficult time sticking to any fitness plan and will not exert much effort. Support: A staunch support system of friends and family keeps almost anyone motivated to reach their goals. When a person starts a new fitness plan or diet program, many changes need to happen. It is important to surround yourself with others that can support you and understand your personal goals. Let those around you know that you need them to support your new goal and try to include them in your objectives. Positive Mind-set: Your enthusiasm will soar if you keep a positive attitude towards your new fitness goals. Think about the positive aspects of a healthier lifestyle and exercise plan and keep that in mind you may be tempted to skip a day at the gym. When following any fitness plan, it is also important to remember that you may have setbacks or you may not achieve your goals as fast as you had hoped. Keeping your stance positive even during the rough times will help you stay focused on your goals. Follow Through: You will find that you have an easier time staying motivated when you make a plan and keep at it. Without understanding each step you need to take to reach your goals, it will be harder to focus on the destination. For example, if you are trying to eat healthier, write down what foods you want to eliminate and foods your want to add to your diet. As you progress, compare your results with your plan and that will help you stay the course. Keep Organized: Keeping organized will keeps the motivation burning to stay on the new fitness plan. If you plan on going to the gym a few times a week, you can get everything you need ready to go the night before. Have your shoes, gym clothes and membership card by the door. Not only will this make it easier for you find exactly what you need, but it will also serve as a visual reminder of your goal. Keep your days planned out and schedule time in for healthy cooking or burning the asphalt. Forms of Motivation: Intrinsic and extrinsic are both types of motivation. Understand what they mean and which one helps keep you motivated. Those who are intrinsically motivated do not need outside forces, such as rewards to stay focused. They have the power from within to stay motivated. Other forces, such as rewards or praise from others, motivate those who are motivated extrinsically. Most people feel motivated both ways. Understand what kind of motivation keeps you passionate. Reward Yourself: Incentives can be a great motivator, especially in a new fitness plan. Give yourself a small reward when you meet each of your goals. This will help you get to your final goal. You may choose to buy yourself a new shirt when you lose ten pounds or maybe go see a movie. Whatever appeals to you would stoke the flames of zeal. Heroes: When you are trying to get a better body through a fitness plan, look for a hero. That person does not have to be famous, but anybody you look up to. Maybe it is someone you know with zest for healthy living. Use that person to emulate when your spirit wanes. Knowledge is Power: As soon as you commit yourself to a new fitness plan, arm yourself with piles of information. Compare different diets and exercise plans. Learn the ins and outs of each one and you can make confident informed decision. Varied Pursuits: Another great way to stay motivated is by diversifying activities. When you start to feel upset, you can set it aside and do something you really love. It might even be possible to include what you love doing to help you achieve your fitness aims. Skin Care Basics

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Ian Henman Skin Care, everyone knows to take care of our skin, but do we pay attention to the details? The quick answer, probably not. A lot of us still run around inthe summer time without sun screen to block harmful UVA and UVB rays. The fact is that the sun is harmful toyour skin. We need to take precautions both in the summer and wintertime. The reality today is that Skin Care has become a big buzzword, not just with dermatologists but also in the businessand beauty world. We need to start paying more attention to our skin, and all over not just our faces. So what can we do? Well Lets start by taking a look at the staple steps of skin care. First off what skin type are you? oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun- damaged Oily: Oily skin tends to be shiny with expanded pores, and is prone to blackheads & blemishes. It’s possible to feel tightness. Combination/normal: This skin type has medium pores, a smooth & level texture, effective circulation, healthy color. Combination / normal skin can tend toward dryness and tightness around the cheek area, but also feel oily in the t-zone. Sensitive: Sensitive skin tends to be thin, frail with fine pores. Generally sensitive skin flushes easily, and is known to broken capillaries, and can be frequently allergic or rashy. Dry: Dry skin feels tight which is the main sing of dryness you’ll find especially after cleansing your skin. May have small wrinkles, flaking and/or red patches. Aging or sun-damaged: Similar to dry skin. Aging and sun-damaged skin also feels tight with visible smaller wrinkles, and slack skin tone. You’ll find the tone mainly around the cheeks and jaw line. Once we know what skin type we are it’s easier to pick the products we need to use for our daily skin care routine. Now onto the steps Cleaning: Now unless you are prone to acne, or other breakouts just keep it simple with a cleanser. You want to use a simplewash that your skin doesn’t react to and is designed for your skin type. You should try to wash twice a day in combinationwith exfoliating. Exfoliate: The most important thing to maintain beautiful skin care is to use a gentle exfoliant daily on your skin. Ourskin cells get replaced approx. every 3 weeks, so by clearing away old and dead cells, making way for the new ones wehelp maintain our glow. Moisturize: Flat out…everyone should moisturize. Even those of us that have oily skin. Of course some should moisturize their skin more then others, but everyone should. A good rule of thumb is when your skin feels tight it’s time to moisturize. Sunscreen: The biggest cause of wrinkles as we age is damage from the sun. It’s important to remember that skin care is a life long journey not just as we age. So ensuring we’re protecting our skin with sunscreen both in the early and later years is important. Also consider that the sun doesn’t just burn or damage our skin in the summer time, it’s a good ideato have some on when doing activities in the winter on sunny days. These are the simple steps that make up a successful skin care routine. It’s important to get into a habit like thisdaily. This is the key to maintaining great skin well into the later years of our life. Try not to get caught up inthe gimmicks of the world. While different injections, and creams can give short-term beauty it’s not 100% known how all these products make out over the long run. Concentrate on basic skin care, and slow and steady wins the race. For more information and resources on taking care of your skin visitBest Skin Care Resources. Creating Success with Difficult Students Part 3

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Troy Parrish PART THREE: Further Interventions for Teachers. Enlisting the help of a teacher in dealing with a challenging student can be invaluable. As a teacher, finding the resources to deal with difficult students and still be available for the remaining students can be a significant challenge. The purpose of this article is to present some ideas that may be helpful in dealing with this challenge. The first intervention in part three is the attention of the teacher. Many students, particularly younger children, will respond well to teacher attention as they want that approval. For positive behavior, positive attention from the teacher such as a smile, nod or a pat on the back can go a long way towards a child maintaining involvement in the educational process in the classroom. For older students, knowing the student and what type of recognition from the teacher would be reinforcing is important. Open acknowledgement for a younger student may be very helpful but for older students may cause embarrassment. In reverse, the withdraw of this attention from the teacher when negative behavior occurs can work to inhibit the undesirable behavior. The introduction of tangible rewards for positive behavior is another intervention that can be used. Simple, straight forward rewards or the more structure token programs can be used. A token program is a behavioral modification program that is established with the understanding that certain behaviors will get specific rewards and typically involves a chart and tracking behavior and rewards. These programs are most effective when they are behaviorally specific, behaviorally concrete and usually involve a few behaviors on which to focus. When used in conjunction with positive teacher attention, these types of programs (token programs) are more powerful than either one by themselves. As with the rules from Part One of this article, there is also times when there is need for consequences for behavior. As would be implied earlier with teacher attention, one consequence that can be utilized is ignoring the child when they are exhibiting negative behavior. Additionally, negative attention from the teacher in the form of a reprimand can also be used. If a reward system has been put into use, the loss of that reward can be a consequence. One way that this works is to provide a certain number of rewards ahead of time and when there is negative behavior the student loses one of those rewards. Another way of looking at this is that the child gets to keep all the rewards he or she has earned through the desirable behavior. Again, the use of time out for negative behavior can be used although a period of speaking with the child about the reason for the time out is important if the child is to learn from that experience. If your child or student requires the presentation of a token program (or behavioral modification program) it will be desirable to eventually move them to other forms of reinforcement. This becomes clear as the child gets older and the types of rewards required to engage them become more complex or simply too expensive. Ideally, you would want to move the child to initially begin to respond to positive teacher attention. After a period of success at the level of positive teacher attention, the introduction of self monitoring and self reward program can be introduced. In self monitoring the student themselves keep track of their behavior and evaluate their performance. This can then be compared to the teachers evaluation either for tangible rewards or reinforcement through positive teacher attention. Ultimately you will want the student to be self monitoring these behaviors without any overt reinforcement be given to them. If you have need of creating a good behavioral modification program, sometimes schools with have a guidance counselor or school psychologist that can assist you in developing an appropriate and effective behavioral modification program. Part Four of this article will look at some ideas for parents at home. Troy L Parrish MA LCPC is a professional counselor with over 17 years of counseling experience. He has spent a significant portion of that time working with children and teenagers, particularly those with behavioral problems and those with Attention Deficit Disorder. How to Grow Peas!

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Terry Blackburn Growing Peas Growing peas gives you the choice of climbing or dwarf varieties; there are so many varieties that peas can be sown at any time from February to November depending on the variety. Choose early varieties for sowing in February and March, main crop varieties for sowing in April and May, late varieties for sowing in June or even later, and winter-growing varieties for sowing in October and November. In the south early varieties may be picked as early as June, and the last of the late varieties mid October. Those varieties which grow over winter can be picked in early May of the following year. Sugar peas (mangetout) and petit pois are grown in exactly the same way. Freshly picked, young sweet and tender, garden peas, are a feast, which can be eaten just straight from the pod. As a vegetable to accompany a meal the rich colour add visual pleasure helping to stimulate our appetites and they can be include in many main course dishes. Soil Preparation Four weeks before sowing, add well-rotted compost and manure into the soil to a depth of 9 in. (228mm) at the rate of a bucketful to the yard. Two weeks before sowing rake in a top dressing of fish manure or bone meal at a rate of 4 oz. (120g) to the sq. yd; alternatively, rake in a mixture of 2 oz.(60g) carbonate of lime and 1 oz. (30g) sulphate of potash to the sq. yd. Sowing For early sowing choose a well-drained area, where the ground has been well prepared to provide aeration. Peas must not be grown in the same plot as in the previous year. Avoid sowing seeds in soils that are wet and cold as they can sometimes be attacked by fungus, then germination is poor. To sow the seeds make 2 in.(50mm) flat-bottomed drills with a hoe. Allow the seeds 3 in. (76mm) of space between each. The distance between the drills will depend on the variety that is being sown. The width between the drills is equal to the height of the plants; 4 ft. (120cm) high varieties should be spaced 4 ft. (120cm) apart, 1- ft. (45cm) varieties should be 1 ft. (45cm) apart. Give the plants protection from birds by placing small twigs over the soil, or use black cotton stranded from pegs close to the ground. General Care When the seedlings are about 3 in. (76mm) high, they should be encouraged to climb, this can be done by erecting posts at the end of each row, between these fasten wire to which plastic netting can then be attached that should run the full length of the row. As soon as the flowers appear the crop should be given an adequate amount of water in order for the pods to grow plump and juicy and to prevent them becoming stunted. Mulching is a good idea because it helps to retain moisture. Harvesting Pick the pods frequently when they are ready to encourage even more pods. If you are growing Mange tout varieties pick before the pods have swollen. Pick the peas as near to the time you intend to cook them as possible to retain the sweetness, few of the ones that I grow get the chance to come into the kitchen for they are generally eaten on site, (lost remembered days of childhood). When the plants have finished fruiting, cut off the stems and put them onto the compost heap, allow the roots to remain in the ground so that they can fix nitrogen into the soil. Terry Blackburn. Dante and Hell

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Robert Baird DANTE: - Dante Alighieri is the tour guide of Hell. In fact you could say he is the creator of Hell if you did not understand he was directed and encouraged as others were being forced to write and create all manner of graven images and religious icons or treatises to support Hell, Satan and the whole dogma of sins and demons. The Church owned all creative work because such creative things came from God and they were the representatives of this God. Nice scam if you can make it work eh? Here is a little academic insight into how he also was tasked to diminish the perception of prior seers and wise people. Inferno XX falls into four narrative segments. Lines 1-30 present the sin of divination in general terms; lines 31-57 introduce famous diviners of antiquity, each of whom figures in and represents a major classical text: Amphiaraus from Statius’ Thebaid, Tiresias from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Arruns from Lucan’s Pharsalia, and Manto from Vergil’s Aeneid; lines 58-99 encompass the digression on Mantova; lines 100-130 contain Dante’s query regarding further diviners, and Vergil’s response, in which he names Eurypylus from the Aeneid and various contemporary practitioners. We note the canto’s symmetry; the general opening and closing sections, each of thirty lines, frame the more particularized interior sequences. The seemingly extraneous section on Mantova is thus entirely surrounded and informed by the commanding issue of prophecy, an issue which is directly related to the canto’s highlighting of poets and poetry, to its evocation of the classical auctores and to the arresting behavior of Vergil. For prophecy is in fact a textual issue; a profeta for Dante is one who foretells, who reads in the magno volume of God’s mind (Par. XV, 50), and deciphers the book of the future. Because prophecy is therefore essentially a matter of correct and incorrect reading, the canto’s emphasis on textuality is insistent: from the initial terzina, which proclaims in deliberately technical language the author’s need to make verse and give form to his twentieth canto, to the equally technical reference to the Aeneid as an alta trageda in line 113; if this is the only locus in the poem in which Dante affixes a numerical tag to a canto, it is also a unique definition of Vergil’s poem as a text belonging to a specific genre. Moreover, the textual awareness of the canto’s opening lines __ Di nova pena mi conven far versi / e dar matera al ventesimo canto / de la prima canzon __ is shared by its final verse: S mi parlava, e andavamo introcque. Here the presence of a word, introcque, whose use by the Florentines is caricatured in the De Vulgari Eloquentia, raises a host of questions about writing and genre, and serves to close the canto on the same textual key with which it began. Inferno XX deals with the validity and legitimacy of the acts of writing and reading. As Hollander has shown, Dante evokes his classical auctores in order to correct them, misreading their texts in such a way as to damn diviners, like Amphiaraus and Tiresias, whom the ancients considered noble practitioners of the art, tellers of truth. By placing these diviners in the fourth bolgia, Dante establishes their falsity, and his disagreement on this score with his classical predecessors. One of the classical predecessors so invoked is Vergil, the Comedy’s resident poeta, and it is as his new self that Vergil retells the story of Manto, altering the earlier account found in the tenth book of the Aeneid. The Latin poem relates that the prophetess bears a child, Ocnus, who founds the city and gives it his mother’s name: qui muros matrisque dedit tibi, Mantua, nomen (who gave you walls and the name of his mother, O Mantua [Aen. X, 200]). The Comedy, on the other hand, relates that Manto, la vergine cruda (82), settled and died in a spot later chosen by men from the surrounding regions as suitable for a city: Fer la citt sovra quell’ ossa morte (91). Most interesting about Vergil’s speech is his closing injunction to the pilgrim to disregard all other accounts of Mantova’s founding; since the only true story is the one he has just heard, the pilgrim must let no lie defraud the truth, i.e. he must reject all other accounts as false (97-99): (1) Author of Diverse Druids Guest ‘expert’ at World-Mysteries.com Columnist for The ES Press Magazzine Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Robert_Baird http://EzineArticles.com/?Dante-and-Hell&id=38862 inhouse up pharmacy all sumatriptan each imigran as imitrex an tablets some mixing it imitrex are with those crack many cocaine take imitrex you statdose who pen did imitrex their tablets through
